Debra Winkler (history) actively pursued her dream of becoming a teacher after serving in the business world for 25 years. She received her bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of Utah, and her master’s degree in Teaching from National University. Debra has taught history and political science to students ranging from junior high school to adult education, and spent the last three years as a professor at Utah Valley University. In addition, she ran a supplemental school for four years and has taught English in Thailand and Israel. As an educator, Debra has an enthusiastic commitment to providing students with academic and “life skills” education while guiding them to develop confidence for future endeavors. She is a hands-on educator who encourages her students to value education and lifelong learning, and to take pride in each individual’s culture and heritage while respecting others. She sets high expectations for her students as well as herself, and her colleagues value her high level of professionalism.

Debra and her husband, Elliot, have seven children and four grandchildren. She was born and raised in the South but has made Utah her home for over 20 years. Debra loves crocheting, reading, watching good movies, and preparing holiday dinners for family and friends. She enjoys volunteering for community activities and has received various awards for her accomplishments. She has been involved with the Utah Holocaust Commemoration at the State Capitol for 15 years and has organized the event as Chair for the last eight years. She is excited to be a part of Early Light Academy and looks forward to sharing her expertise with her students.
